Art Flow Activity 🎬 Workshop: "Super 8mm Film – From Shooting to Screening"
There are experiences that simply cannot be replicated. Not because they are rare—but because they are analog. Every meter of film, every frame, every second of exposure is real, physical, and permanent. During the ART FLOW Youth Exchange, we stepped into this world—a world where the image doesn’t emerge from the cloud, but from a developer mixed from instant coffee.
Facilitated by: Óscar Castillo (Young Filmmaker from Spain)
Educational Approach
This workshop was a prime example of Peer-to-Peer learning — led by Óscar, young filmmaker and peer to the participants, who shared his passion and technical expertise directly and without barriers. The entire activity followed the Learning by Doing philosophy in its purest form: participants learned by actually shooting, physically developing the film, and watching their vision come to life. Mistakes were not failures; they were an essential part of the discovery process.
Objectives
🎬 Understanding Analog Filmmaking: To learn the entire workflow from shooting with a Super 8mm camera to the physical development of the film.
🎬 Experimenting with Alternative Processes: To discover eco-friendly alternatives to chemical developers and understand the fundamental principles of the photographic process.
🎬 Collaborative Narrative Creation: To collectively create a short film—from initial concept through shooting to final projection.
🎬 Interdisciplinary Synergy: To bridge visual arts with a soundtrack created during the OutSide Records experimental music workshop.
🎬 Environmental Awareness: To work with eco-friendly developers as a conscious alternative to traditional chemical processes.
Activity Process
The activity unfolded in three interconnected phases, forming a complete creative cycle:
Phase 1 — Shooting in the Wild:
Armed with an analog Super 8mm camera, participants ventured into the surroundings of the Zaježová educational centre. Under Óscar’s guidance, they learned to work with the limited length of the film reel, thinking carefully about every shot and perceiving movement, light, and composition differently than in the digital world. This phase resulted in three short experimental films.
Phase 2 — Developing the Film with the Cafenol Method:
On the final evening of the exchange, the bathroom of the educational centre was transformed into an improvised darkroom. Participants mixed their own Cafenol developer—an ecological alternative to traditional chemicals—using just three household ingredients:
☕ Instant coffee
🧼 Washing soda
💊 Vitamin C
The film strips were submerged in the solution, hung to dry, and the group waited. The tension was palpable. And then—it worked.
Phase 3 — Night Screening:
The "cherry on top" of the entire ART FLOW exchange was the night screening of the finished film using an vintage 8mm projector. The soundtrack was composed of sounds created during the OutSide Records experimental music workshop—music played on fruit and unconventional tools. Image and sound, both born during the same week, met in one final, powerful moment.
Results & Impact
🎞️Three Short Experimental Films: Physical, tangible works—not just files on a disk, but actual film strips that passed through the hands of every participant.
🎞️Holistic Process Mastery: From capturing light through the chemistry of development to final projection—participants experienced film as a complex craft rather than just a medium.
🎞️Ecological Innovation: Producing a DIY Cafenol developer proved that artistic creation can be conscious, experimental, and gentle on nature at the same time.
🎞️Interdisciplinary Synergy: Merging visuals (Super 8mm film) with sound (experimental music workshop) created a piece that transcended individual workshops and became a symbol of the entire exchange.
🎞️Unforgettable Finale: The night screening under the open sky served as the natural climax of the project—a moment where all the threads of the exchange intertwined into a single moving image.
🎬 ART FLOW: 8mm Short Film (Original - Negative)
Experience the final result of our film workshop. This experimental short was captured on Super 8mm analog black-and-white film, the footage was hand-developed using the Caffenol-C process – a sustainable method using coffee, washing soda, and vitamin C. The original soundtrack was composed during a workshop using experimental sounds and fruit-based instruments led by the young facilitators from Solidarity project OutSide. This work reflects a collective exploration of analog film, sound, and youth expression.
